Toners: A Skin Care Fundamental Often Missed

Many people these days are not using a toner. Toners are a hugely important part of our skin care routine but unfortunately toners have gotten a bad rap. Toners used to serve a totally different purpose. Back in our parent’s days, cleansers were made from mineral oil and the only way to get it off was an alcohol-based toner. This alcohol-based toner was so commonly used that it became what we all think of as a toner.

What most people don’t know is that toners serve up a ton of very important benefits.

  • They boost the moisture content of your skin keeping it from being dehydrated. Today so many people drink caffeinated beverages and don’t drink enough water. So often I see dehydrated skin because of this. Dehydrated skin can often be confused with oily skin because it appears to be shiny. Dehydrated skin is shiny but not oily. Dehydrated skin is also confused with dry skin. Dry skin needs oil. Whereas, dehydrated skin needs water.
  • Removes leftover cleanser and oil. Let’s face it, some of us don’t spend a lot of time washing our face and there can still be a residue left over. If you use a toner after a treatment or masque, the toner will make sure the product has been removed from the skin.
  • To calm and freshen the skin with natural plant botanicals. This is great for sensitive skin. Many sensitive skin types will be pink, red and irritated after cleansing. Aloe Vera, chamomile, tea tree and lavender are just some of the plants that help calm and freshen skin.
  • To introduce water soluble active ingredients to our skin. This is the amazing part! If you use a toner prior to applying a moisturizer, you can trap water, aloe vera, and all kinds of wonderful water soluble ingredients next to you skin all day long! Most toners will help bind moisture to the skin.
  • A toner also helps your other products to absorb evenly. After you’ve toned and you’re ready to apply your moisturizer, you should only need a small, pea sized amount. If you skip the toner you’ll find you need to add more moisturizer to get the same result.
  • It rebalances your skin’s PH. Our skin is naturally acidic, normally with a pH balance of between 4 and 5. After cleansing, due to the alkaline nature of cleansers, the pH balance of skin gets disturbed. When this happens your skin needs to work overtime to restore the balance (and that may result in oil), but using a toner helps to restore this balance quickly. Your skin will restore itself on it’s on but it will take about 20 minutes. Who wants to wait 20 minutes to put on their moisturizer? This also works with any other treatment. A chemical exfoliant will change your skin to be more acidic and a toner used right after will make sure the product is neutralized and will restore the PH Balance.

There are many different toners these days and they’ve seriously evolved the last few years. Since we now know that we can put just about anything water soluble in them, we can deliver all sorts of benefits. The new generation of toners is here. Here are some ingredients that you’ll find in some of today’s new toners and what they can do for you:

Antioxidants are nutrients (vitamins and minerals) and enzymes (proteins inside your body) that can help to prevent and repair damage to your body's tissue. Antioxidants do this by slowing or preventing the effect of free radicals, which start oxidation -- a process that causes damage from oxygen that can lead to cell dysfunction. If you've seen a peeled apple turn brown, you've seen oxidation in action. As antioxidants block the effects of free radicals, they end up being oxidized. This is why it's important to constantly replenish your supply of antioxidants. Vitamin A, C and E in particular have great benefits on the skin. Vitamins A and C also encourage cell and tissue growth, helping the body to repair itself. This is very helpful to the skin, which is constantly shedding and re-growing cells.

·         Toners containing glycolic or other alpha hydroxy acids can help to prevent ingrown hairs, so it also aids in grooming. Glycolic Acid is an exfoliator. It safely removes the outer layer of dead skin cells on the surface your skin, bring fresh new skin to the surface. This is beneficial for those who are looking for ingredients that help with anti-aging. Glycolic acid can also help lighten discoloration of the skin, such as sun spots or age spots. It can also help those with acne-prone and blackhead-prone skin by getting rid of congestion and keeping pores clean.

·         Toners containing Hyaluronic Acid. This is a mega performing ingredient that holds a 1,000 times its own weight in water and is dynamic for hydrating the skin.

·         Natural plant botanicals will calm and freshen skin. They will also hydrate and are great for sensitive skin types. Some can actually work below the skin to block inflammatory triggers. Some plant botanicals can also eliminate excess oil or remove it all together.

Here’s a list of toner’s that I think are excellent. I’ll also mention which skin types would benefit from them and also which skin concerns or conditions would be helped by them.

Cleansing Your Skin

Today we use mouthwash, hand sanitizer and antibacterial everything from dish soap to our hand soap. Yet, ironically, we live life with dirty skin. Really dirty skin! Why is skin so dirty? This is probably because most people only spend about 20 seconds washing their face, which is weird considering we spend so much time on our hair and makeup. 20 seconds isn’t enough to actually get it clean. Our skin is dirty, dirtier then skin was 20 years ago because of environmental pollutants in the air, and our cosmetics, such as sunblock and our waterproof makeup. On top of that, our skin’s naturally sticky sebum is thick, slick, waxy and coats our skin by the middle of the day. 20 seconds can’t get through a layer of oil-based debris on the surface. The sebum is going to stay on the skin preventing our skin care products from doing their job. A cleanse is going to emulsify to debris, dirt and oil on our face but not truly take it off. This is why a double-cleanse is necessary. This is your secret to ultra, healthy, beautiful, clean skin.

Cleansing with an oil
Cleansing with oil, such as plant-based oil, can actually melt away the dirt and makeup. It’s also true that oil is attracted to oil. This means that cleansing with oil will actually remove the excess sebum from your skin. This also rids you of having to use a cotton pad and eye makeup remover which can be more abrasive then using your fingers. Just apply the cleansing oil to clean fingers and spread the product onto your entire face including the eye area. Then, dampen fingers and when you add water to the precleanse it becomes milky. Then just remove the product and at the same time you’re removing the oil and most of the dirt, makeup and other debris. This way you can get what’s leftover with your second cleanse.

Cleansing Oil Options:

These are professional-grade, concentrated products. Use a small amount. Will last for about 4-6 months.

Which cleanser is right for you?

There are 5 different types of skin types. Which skin type do you have?

Normal skin: This skin type has a proper balance of moisture, oil and durability.

Oily skin: Does your face look shiny, greasy or oily a few hours after washing it?

Dry skin: Dry skin features facial pores that are hard to see a few hours after being washed.

Sensitive skin: This skin type often feels tight or itchy, and experiences allergic reactions and flushing when put into contact with certain chemicals.

Combination skin: If some parts of your face are oily while others are dry or sensitive, you have combination skin.

Once you’ve got your skin type figured out you need to find the right cleanser for you. Here’s what each skin type needs it’s cleanser to do.

Normal Skin: A cleanser that thoroughly removes impurities without disturbing the skin's natural moisture balance.

Oily skin: a cleanser that purifies oily skin. Is water-soluble and removes excess oils and refine the skin's texture.

Dry skin: A rich, creamy cleanser that conditions dry skin. A formula that gently lifts impurities while replenishing skin and maintaining moisture levels.

Sensitive skin: A gentle cleanser. A cleanser that helps calm and cool the redness and heat associated with reactive, sensitized or over processed skin, and easily rinses away or wipes off.

Combination skin: help reduce control excess oil in the t-zone while hydrating for balanced skin.

Here's some suggestions for great products for different skin types:

These cleansers are professional products so a dime size amount will do for each cleanse because they are concentrated products. They should last you about 4-6 months. That's usually 3 times longer then most drugstore cleansers. Click on the product name to view pics, description and where to purchase:

Skin Care Basics

Skin Care Basics
Your skin is your body’s largest organ and makes up roughly 18% of your weight. It serves as a protective outer layer that keeps in moisture and keeps out invasive organisms.. It protects your organs against injury, regulates the body’s temperature and has self-healing capabilities.
The best way to maintain healthy skin is to prevent skin damage from occurring in the first place. Wrinkles, hyperpigmentation and hypopigmentation are all the result of skin damage from overexposure to the sun. The aging process for skin is unavoidable. As we age, skin becomes dryer and thinner. Frowning, smiling or squinting, cause wrinkles over time from repeated movements of facial muscles. Stress, gravity and obesity also contribute. It also then becomes more susceptible to bruising.
The first and most important step in taking care of your skin and preventing damage is plain and simply to have a good skin care routine. Future topics will be adding products to treat some of your concerns but I’ll just start with the basics.

Skin Care Routine
A healthy skin care routine can reduce the symptoms of aging in the skin and create healthy skin in the future. :
·         Use eye makeup remover or a pre-cleansing product to remove eye makeup every night.
·         Wash your face using a cleanser made for your skin type and lukewarm water in the morning and at night.
·         Exfoliate your skin once a day. There are products for exfoliating that are only safe to use twice a week. Make sure you’re familiar with your product.
·         Apply a toner made for your skin type. This will hydrate and ready the skin for the next step.
·         Apply a moisturizer specifically for your skin type in the morning and before bed. Make sure to choose a daytime moisturizer that contains an SPF. It’s not recommended to use a moisturizer with an SPF at night.
·         Wear sunblock when outside. Always reapply as product directions specify.
·         Do not use tanning beds. Besides the obvious dangers such as burning, hyperpigmentation, hypopigmentation and cancer, these beds are not regulated by the government and therefor do not have to meet sanitation guidelines.
·         Maintain a healthy diet and drink lots of water. This will keep skin hydrated and healthy.
·         Get an adequate amount of sleep every day.
·         Don’t smoke cigarettes. Smoking can accelerate the aging process through asphyxiation of the skin.
·         Avoid stress. Stress causes a chemical response in your body that makes skin more sensitive and reactive. It can also make it harder for skin problems to heal.

·         Get monthly facials from an esthetician. A skin specialist can help recommend the proper products and home care to resolve issues and maintain healthy skin.
